  • The five abilities of your personal development quest.

Why the President Should Read This Book
If there’s one lesson to be learned from this book–which isn’t really a book, it’s a recording of portions of Jim’s seminars–it’s that when things go badly, it’s important to look at oneself. Politicians have a tendency, if not a rule, to blame others for the problems they experience and that their constituents experience while said politician is in office. To be sure, in our system of government where power changes hands so often, there surely are things to be blamed on one’s predecessors. But voters are tired of leaders who blame others. We want leaders who, even if it is the predecessor’s fault, take ownership of the problem and tell us how they’re going to fix it. After all, they sought the office, and when a leader complains about the problems they inherited with the office, voters start to wonder if the politician is saying he wouldn’t have sought the office if he had known all the problems that would come with it, and then voters start to wonder if that politician really wants to win re-election.

The point is, leaders who are effective recognize that it is up to them to solve problems, and that if they’re not capable, they need to figure out how to fix the problems–and fast. This book provides some time-honored methods of developing one’s capacity to deal with problems, such as maintaining a library, keeping a journal, and building one’s personal value and explains why every leader needs to do these things and how.

Personal Notes
I had never heard of Jim Rohn before. I still don’t have much of a clue who he is, other than that he appears to have done well for himself. I get the impression he was big stuff in the business world in the 70′s-80′s or thereabouts. What I like about learning from people whose names I don’t recognize is that my opinions aren’t shaded by the reputation of the person–I can take their comments for what they’re worth. If I think their advice stinks, I don’t have to worry about feeling like I’m the only one who thinks so. That said, Jim Rohn has a great outlook on life, and far from being self-help fluff, this book is real principles, habits, and skills that will improve anyone’s life who cares to apply them.
